The White House announced that it has accepted it's 10,000th Syrian Refugee, almost 2 months ahead of schedule. Many in Congress have stated that the US does not have the capacity to support the refugee and Republican nominee Donald Trump has made the issue a focal point of his campaign. Obama Press Secretary Josh Earnest lauded the achievement, saying:
"The president is gratified that we have succeeded in meeting this goal...We were able to do all of that without cutting any corners when it comes to security...I think the president would like to see the United States continue to increase our ambition in responding to this global calamity" -Josh Earnest
President Obama has the ability to set refugee limits under the Refugee Act of 1980 after consulting Congress which he has begun to do. Last year, the US only accepted 1700 refugees after what the White House called an intensive vetting process.
