On Thursday Donald Trump and Barack Obama met at the White House for the first time. The two men have not exactly had kind things to say about each other in the past, but it appeared that they were able to set aside their differences for the sake of the country. In addition, Michelle Obama and Melania Trump also met, having tea and touring around the White House.

Long history of dislike
Donald Trump played a key role in the promotion of the birther controversy, calling into question whether Obama was born in the United States. This eventually led to Obama releasing his birth certificate to the public, but did little to endear Trump to Obama starting a long history of dislike. Throughout the campaign Trump was trashed Obama’s policies as president, blaming many different issues on him. On the other hand, Obama has spoken of Trump as not being ready for the job of president, and has highlighted his temperament and irresponsibility.
Meeting appeared civil
While we do not know what happened behind closed doors, the two men appeared civil with each other for the press. Both have called for unity within the country after the election ended with a Trump victory. Given Trump’s extremely harsh words towards Obama in the past, it was surprising to hear of him speak well of the president.
Mr. President, it was a great honor being with you and I look forward to being with you many, many more times. — Donald Trump
Obama has said that he wants a smooth transition to take place and that he will work with Trump’s team to ensure this happens. It will be interesting to see how these two men manage to work together, as will surely have to happen for the good of the country.
