Kathleen G. Kane, once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, was found guilty Monday of 9 criminal counts, ranging from perjury to leaking grand jury information. The outcome from the scandal has been vast, various other major state officials including Supreme Court judges have had to resign and Kane has had her law license taken away, though she remains in the position of Attorney General.
The incident happened when an article was written about Kane that accused her of dropping investigations into politicians taking bribes. In retaliation, the prosecution alleges Kane released confidential jury files and then lied about doing so. She believed that the previous attorney general was behind the newspaper article, and she released the files to show his errors as a prosecutor.
Governor Tom Wolf asked for Kane's resignation in light of the decision, saying:
"As I have made clear, I do not believe Kathleen Kane should be Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I believed this when she was charged, and today, after conviction, there should be no question that she should resign immediately" -Tom Wolf
Kane has so far refused to resign saying that it would be a tacit admission of guilt. An appeal is expected.
