Colin Powell is a retired four-star general, most well known for serving as the Secretary of State for President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. He is considered a liberal leaning Republican, although he did endorse Barack Obama in the 2008 and 2012 elections.
On Tuesday e-mails of his were posted to the website DCLeaks, and first reported on by BuzzFeed News. The source of DCLeaks is unknown, but it is suspected that it is related to Russian intelligence. The timeframe of the emails range from the summer of 2014 through to August of 2016. They were from his personal account, and were intended for friends and acquaintances. In response to the leak an aide to Mr. Powell stated:
We are confirming that General Powell has been hacked and that they are his emails. We have no further comment at this time. - Aide of Colin Powell’s statement
Some harsh words for Trump
During the Republican presidential nomination, he had not weighed in publicly on Trump, but privately sent an email saying “to go on and call him an idiot just emboldens him.” Furthermore in a different email he went on to describe Trump as a “national disgrace and an international pariah.”
In yet another email regarding Trump he implied that he was racist. This was in regards to Trump’s role in fuelling the conspiracy theory of whether or not Barack Obama was born in America, and he wrote of Trump that he:
can never overcome what he tried to do to Obama with his search for the birth certificate...the whole birther movement was racist. - Colin Powell, from leaked email
Strong criticisms for Hillary also
There have been attempts by the Hillary campaign to drag him into her email scandal, much to his annoyance. In regards to this he wrote that she “could have killed this two years ago by merely telling everyone honestly what she had done and not tie me into it. I told her staff three times not to try that gambit. I had to throw a mini tantrum at a Hampton’s party to get their attention.”
In another email, again speaking on Hillary and using her initials this time he said “Everything HRC touches she kind of screws up with hubris.” While he certainly does not like Trump, when it comes does to voting for Hillary he said that:
I would rather not have to vote for her, although she is a friend I respect. A 70-year person with a long track record, unbridled ambition, greedy, not transformational, with a husband still di**ing bimbos at home (according to the NYP). - Colin Powell, from leaked email
Will he give an Endorsement?
Mr. Powell has not yet given an endorsement for either candidate in the 2016 election. In the e-mails that have been leaked so far he had some harsh words for both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The question remains of if and when he will give an official endorsement to either candidate.
