FBI Recommends No Charges for Hillary

The director of the FBI, James B. Comey announced on Tuesday morning that the FBI would recommend to the Department of Justice that no charges be filed against Hillary Clinton over her use of a personal email server while she was Secretary of State.

No charges are appropriate in this case.

The issue of Hillary’s use of a personal email account and server to conduct State Department business has dogged the Clinton campaign since the information first came to light in March 2015. It has fueled a general sense of distrust in Clinton which has been reflected in her high unfavorable poll numbers.

Clinton was careless in handling of classified documents

The FBI director did note that classified emails were found on the Clinton server and that “it’s possible that "hostile actors" gained access to Clinton's personal email account.” Clinton, who met with the FBI for three and half hours on Saturday, has maintained that she never sent or received emails that were marked classified at the time they were received or sent from her private account.

While there is evidence they were extremely careless in their handling of highly classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.

Still alive as campaign issue

While the released of the FBI report clears away a potential roadblock to Hillary’s nomination, it will remain alive as an issue during the campaign. The meeting last week between former President Clinton and Attorney General Loretta Lynch will fuel theories that a deal was struck with the Obama administration to protect Clinton. Donald Trump was quick to denounce the FBI report as “rigged and unfair.”

The system is rigged. General Petraeus got in trouble for far less. Very very unfair! As usual, bad judgment. FBI director said Crooked Hillary compromised our national security. No charges. Wow!
— Donald J. Trump

But, no matter. There is little doubt that today was a decisive win for Hillary Clinton and her supporters. Her exoneration by the FBI of having committed any criminal act through her use of a private email account clears away a potential threat that has hung over her campaign for more than a year.
