CNN has formally severed ties with Donna Brazile after WikiLeaks posted a compromising email from Brazile to Clinton campaign chair John Podesta and communication director Jennifer Palmieri. The email showed Brazile, the acting head of the Democratic National Committee giving the Clinton campaign one of the debate questions a day before a primary debate with Bernie Sanders.
Question given before debate
One of the questions directed to HRC tomorrow is from a woman with a rash. Her family has lead poison and she will ask what, if anything, will Hillary do as president to help the ppl of Flint. — Donna Brazile, email to John Podesta dated March 5, 2016
Political analyst for CNN
At the time the email was sent, Ms. Brazile was serving as a political analyst for CNN. WikiLeaks released the March 5 email earlier today, which was in addition to an another email released by WikiLeaks several weeks ago, in which Brazile had passed along another a debate question related to the death penalty.
We are completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her [Brazile] interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor. — Lauren Pratapas, CNN spokesperson
Ms. Brazile has denied that CNN gave her advance access to questions and, according to The New York Times, she has felt “persecuted” by those questioning her actions.
Head of DNC
Brazile is currently serving as acting head of the Democratic National Committee. She stepped into that role when the previous chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to resign after leaked emails showed that the DNC had violated its supposed neutrality in the Democratic primaries by favoring Mrs. Clinton over Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Draining the swamp
Donald Trump seized on the news of Ms. Brazile’s departure from CNN, which he cited as another example of the news media’s bias against his campaign.
Speaking of draining the swamp, Donna Brazile did it again. WikiLeaks today, she gave the questions to a debate to Hillary Clinton. And that was from a couple of weeks ago. Happened again, but this time far worse. She gave the questions to a debate to Hillary Clinton. If Mrs. Clinton received questions in advance from Ms. Brazile, Mr. Trump asked, “why didn’t she report it? — Donald Trump
In and by itself, the story of Ms. Brazile giving questions in advance of debates to the Clinton campaign would probably not make much news and would fall into the category of “dirty tricks” which is a time-honored tradition in both political parties. However, given the brouhaha over Mrs. Clinton’s emails that was reignited last week with the announcement that the FBI was taking another look at Mrs. Clinton’s emails, the timing of the story is unfortunate for the Clinton campaign.
