Former President George W. Bush reportedly told close staffers and aides that he believed that "he was the last Republican President" at an April meeting in Texas.
Politco reported Bush's comments, which allegedly came in April when Donald Trump held a commanding lead in the primary and Ted Cruz was Trump's last viable contender for the nomination. Bush, along with his father and brother, is refusing to attend this Republican convention in what many have interpreted as a protest of presumptive nominee Donald Trump's views. This marks the first time in nearly 40 years that no member of the Bush family has attended the convention.
In addition to the Bush's , none of the other party's living nominees other than 1996 nominee Bob Dole are attending the convention. 2012 nominee Mitt Romney has been open about his dislike for Trump's views saying
"Let me put it plainly, if we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished"
Meanwhile, 2008 nominee John McCain is facing an intense battle for re-election in Arizona.
